We've had busy week packed with creativity, exploration and new skills! 🎉

🌳 WAU – Rainforest Explorers!

Our pupils have been venturing through the layers of the rainforest, discovering incredible animals from the forest floor to the treetops 🦜🐍🐒. They’ve been using books and online resources to research animals to write their own non‑chronological reports!

📚 Literacy

During guided reading, we’ve been digging into the features of non‑fiction books and using the fantastic EPIC online library. We’re also super excited to begin our new class novel ‘The Explorer’ this week!

➗ Maths Magic

The class has been developing their confidence with decimals, learning to order, round and add to two decimal places. Brilliant progress all round! ✨

🏐 PE – Handball Heroes

Huge thanks to GAA coach Fionnuala, who has been helping the children strengthen their handball skills over the past three weeks. Amazing improvement and enthusiasm from everyone! 🙌

🎨 Art Attack

Our talented artists have produced beautiful, realistic toucan drawings — full of colour and character! 🖍️🦜✨

⛪ Religion – A Very Special Visit

The pupils enjoyed a fantastic trip to The Saint Patrick Centre, where they learned about the tradition of St Brigid’s Day and had the wonderful opportunity to make their very own St Brigid’s crosses. It was a memorable hands‑on experience that everyone loved!

P6 Visit the Museum

Primary 6 enjoyed an engaging trip to the Down County Museum enhancing their understanding of the Famine through historical artefacts and learning about the gaol, Victorian living conditions, roles, responsibilities and punishments.

The excursion also included a walking tour of English Street and exploring the history of the Cathedral - did you know that historical reports suggest an Earthquake in Downpatrick caused the roof of the Cathedral to cave in?! 🤯

Fun with Fractions

The pupils have been working hard this week consolidating their understanding of fractions. They have been looking at naming fractions, identifying fractions of shapes and finding fractions of amounts. On Thursday, they applied their skills to a range of fun activities. Leading the Way in Coding

Congratulations to our P6CM digital leaders, Katie and Ellen, who have successfully led two ICT lessons with their class. Katie and Ellen taught the children how to code the Microbits, using both animation and music. The class were very impressed with their new teachers 🤩

Dream Space

Primary 6 Trip to Dream Space at W5 Belfast 🖥️

Our Primary 6 pupils had a fantastic day at Dream Space in W5 Belfast, filled with exciting STEM challenges and plenty of fun!

In the first session, the pupils worked in teams to build the tallest possible free-standing skyscraper using only paper, straws, and cellotape. It seemed straightforward — until their towers had to withstand the power of an earthquake! Congratulations to Caoimhe, Clíodhna, Emily, Emily, and Ziva from P6SS, who built the winning structure. 🏆

During the second session, the pupils explored coding with Micro:bits, learning how to create flashing light sequences and even program their own rock, paper, scissors generators.

Despite the rainy weather, it was a brilliant day of creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork! 🌧️🏗️💡

P6CM are off to a flying start this half term!

From history to mindfulness, it's been a jam-packed few weeks:

🌏 In WAU, pupils explored Ireland during The Famine with a brilliant online workshop led by Dr Hannah Gibson from Omagh Folk Museum—complete with real artefacts and even the smell of rotting potatoes! 🥔😷

✍️ In Literacy, they've been mastering adverbs and diving into procedural writing, identifying key features like pros!

✖️➗Maths has been all about speed and accuracy with times tables via TTRockstars, now powering up their written and mental calculation skills! ⚡🧠

🌸 In Religion, creativity bloomed as the class made beautiful flowers for our Garden of Remembrance display, to remember our loved ones who have died.

🧘‍♂️ And we’ve just launched the Aware NI Paws B Mindfulness programme—a 6-week journey into calm, focus, and wellbeing.

Congratulations to all the TTRockstars certificate winners for October. The pupils have been working hard to improve their status in the Studio games, building up their speed and accuracy with their times tables. A great performance by all. The challenge is on now for November 🤩

Natural Disasters

To complete their Natural Disasters topic, P6CM investigated earthquakes looking at their causes and impact. They discovered that engineers are now designing buildings that can withstand an earthquake. The pupils then worked in small teams to see if they could design their own structure. There was lots of collaboration, discussion and evaluation going on as many different designs were tried. Finally, their structures were tested on jelly to see if they would collapse. There are definitely some future engineers in this class as some very solid structures were created. The children also learnt how to react in class if an earthquake strikes, by participating in an earthquake drill. Well done P6CM.

Maths Week

P6CM had lots of fun this week celebrating Maths Week. The children really enjoyed designing and making maths games for the P3 children and loved the opportunity to play the games with the P3 classes on Thursday. The mild weather this week gave us the opportunity to take our problem solving skills outside and investigate numbers within our environment, lots of mental maths skills were required. The highlight for the class was having the students from Lecale Trinity Grammar in for a maths workshop. Many areas of the maths curriculum were investigated in a fun, engaging way.

Praying the Rosary

P6CM set aside time each day this week to pray a decade of the Rosary. They learned how October was the month of the Rosary and particpated in the One Million Children Praying the Rosary Event.

STEM fun in P6CM

While the weather was still good, P6CM took the opportunity to take the learning outside for their first STEM activity. Linking in with their topic of Natural Disasters, the pupils looked at the forces involved in volcanic eruptions by creating small exploding rockets outside.

The Structure of the World

Our first World Around Us topic is Natural Disasters. The pupils began the topic by looking at the structure of the world. To consolidate their understanding, they created small playdough models clearly showing the layers of the world. The pupils also wrote up a clear set of instructions on how to make the models.

Investigating Shape and Space

P6CM got off to a great start in September in their Maths lessons by focusing on Shape and Space. The pupils revised the names and properties of 2D shapes as well as investigating symmetry. They also applied their problem-solving skills with a range of shape puzzles and games.

Instructional Writing

P6CM have just completed their writing unit looking at procedural writing. They have looked at many examples of instructions and have written instructions on how to make play-dough models of the Earth, how to program the Dash and Dot robots and even produced coding instructions for the Microbits. Their final piece of work was most definitely their best, as the children wrote instructions on 'How to Steal Christmas' based on the book by Dr Seuss. The enthusiasm and creativity shown for this work was amazing and their finished pieces of work were outstanding. Well done P6, I'm so proud of you.

Natural Disasters

As part of our new topic on Natural Disasters, P6CM have been learning about the structure of the world. The best way to learn about this was to create a model of it. Great fun was had as the children followed a set of instructions to recreate the world using playdough. They were able to name each layer and describe it. As well as this, the children developed their understanding of tectonic plates by working collaboratively to complete a world map which had been divided up along the plate boundaries..

The children used their knowledge to type up their own set of instructions for others to follow, as part of our writing focus on Procedural Writing.

Coding with Microbits

P6CM have been learning to code the Microbits. A huge thanks to our digital leader, James, who did a fantastic job teaching his classmates. The pupils all had great fun practising their skills and are looking forward to learning more next week.

Maths Week '24

A great week this week showing the practical and fun aspects of maths. The class had great fun planning and creating maths games for P3. They had to make their games fun and engaging whilst being suitable for the younger children. It was great to see their ideas change and develop as they worked in teams to construct their game. The games proved to be a huge success with P3 and it was lovely watching the interaction between the two year groups.

P6 also had the opportunity to interact with students from Lecale Trinity in a very enjoyable and practical maths session.

European Day of Languages

It was a great day in P6CM on European Day of Languages. The pupils dressed in the colours of Italy and discovered a bit more about the country, its language and its food. A busy day for the class as they also took responsibility for the tuck shop and did a fantastic job.

Viking Longships

Making the most of the good weather, P6CM took the learning outside to estimate and measure just how long the Viking Longships were. After estimating the length, they used trundle wheels and metre sticks to accurately measure out the longship. Obviously, the best bit was sitting in and rowing their ships.

Maths: Revising 2D Shape

We have been revising the properties of 2D shapes looking at names, sides, angles and symmetry. The children worked hard to investigate the properties and then worked collaboratively on puzzles and practical tasks to consolidate their learning.

P6CM have been investigating angles. They named the different types of angles and went on an angle search around the school taking photos. The photos were collated into Pic Collages. They went on to participate in a carousel of activities which involved labelling, sorting and measuring with a protractor.

Outdoor Learning

Making the most of the sunshine, some of the pupils had the chance to go outside and use our new outdoor classroom. We have been looking at converting units of measurement, so we headed outside with our rulers, metre sticks and trundle wheels to put our learning into practice.

P6 enjoyed a visit from Allan from 'Wee Critters' on Tuesday 9th May. The pupils interacted with a variety of animals including a cockroach, snake and parrots. The visit was both entertaining and informative.

P6CM were busy celebrating World Book Day on Thursday 2nd March. They wrote collaborative adventure stories, discussed their favourite books and created a charter on the rights of the reader, creating posters on the iPad to illustrate them.
